I of course don't have the answers but I do have a collection of interesting links that may be useful. Keep in mind that the mainstream media will tailor the story to reduce panice. Also keep in mind that no one really knows what the worst case scenario would actually entail.
Dr Jeff Master's Wunderblog has a technical discussion of the radiation risks

Washington's Blog has an excellent discussion of the current state of the disaster with an embedded clip of the Rachel Maddow show at Global Research
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=23734
Rachel's guest on the show, a physicist from Princeton, says that the disaster could release 8 times a normal reactor's radiation capacities even without a metldown because the spent fuel rods, which are exposed in some of the reactors (#4), release more radiation when heated than the reactor cores (because there are more spent rods and because they are not encased). The spent fuel rods would have to be heated to release the radiation.
Propublica has a very comprehensive reading list about the nature of the disaster and its risks

The Economic Collapse Blog has a list of indicators of the severity of the crisis
