Akiyoshi Abe. “Study: Chimps' special care enables disabled infant to survive in wild.” The Asahi Shimbun, December 2, 2015. http://ajw.asahi.com/article/sci_tech/science/AJ201512020001
KYOTO--Wild chimpanzees for the first time were found taking special care of a severely disabled infant, underscoring just how social these animals are, Japanese researchers said.
The scientists, primarily from Kyoto University, observed a group of 60 chimpanzees in Tanzania, eastern Africa, including a newborn female with a severe congenital disability.
The long-term survey showed the infant’s mother and sister carefully tending to the special needs of the offspring for nearly two years.
